Launched as a registered Canadian charity in 1998 by the Ottawa Senators NHL franchise owner of the time, Rod Bryden, and governed by a group of dedicated community volunteers ever since, the Foundation took a leadership role, on behalf of the hockey club, for its philanthropic and community investment endeavours.
Throughout its 22-year relationship with the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, the Foundation raised millions of dollars in partnership with NHL players and alumni, corporate partners, community event organizers, individuals, and fans of the team.
As a result, $35+ million was granted to hundreds of charities throughout eastern Ontario and western Quebec to support programs that provided opportunities for children and youth to access sport, recreation, healthcare, and educational opportunities.
In the spring of 2020, the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club determined it wanted to take its philanthropic and community granting efforts in a new direction.
The volunteer board of directors of the Foundation, as a result, made the difficult but necessary decision to see its relationship with the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club conclude on July 31, 2020, the date in which the Licencing Agreement between the Foundation and Capital Sports & Entertainment Inc. expired.
On October 28, 2020 the Foundation launched operations under its new name of Ottawa-Gatineau Youth Foundation (OGYF) with incredible support and enthusiasm from the community.
Both the staff team and volunteer board of directors is committed to ensuring the 22-year legacy of making a measurable impact in the lives of young people by providing them with game changing opportunities continues for years to come.
